Ampaplastics is the leading extruder of rigid plastic sheeting in South Africa, supplying the refrigeration, automotive, building, security, glazing and display industries with sheet product running in thousands of metric tonnes per annum.
Development of local technology has resulted in the company's ability to blend, co-extrude and laminate specially stabilized and modified materials to suit specific market demands and requirements. The company has a hi-tech laboratory at its head office in Elandsfontein, Johannesburg. Here sophisticated equipment provides the highest standards of testing and control which enable Ampaplastics to offer the marketplace total product quality and colour matching.
Ampaplastics was the first company in South Africa to successfully manufacture flat and profile polycarbonate and twin wall polypropylene sheet.
Ampa Plastics is South Africa’s leading supplier
of the following thermoplastic materials and
branded products, most of which it manufactures
on 12 extrusion lines at its factory in Elandsfontein,
Johannesburg:
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
ABS, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is a member of the styrene family
of polymers. It shares many properties with polystyrene, the main
difference being that it is considerably tougher and more resistant to
impact, even at temperatures of up to - 40ºC (for special-grade ABS).
Datasheet
Abcryl® is the Ampa Plastics brand name
for acrylic-capped ABS.
It is manufactured by co-extruding ABS with a layer of PMMA (acrylic)
to create a material that combines the impact strength of ABS with the
glossy finish and scratch-resistant exterior of PMMA.
Datasheet
High-impact polystyrene (HIPS) is a rubbermodified
polystyrene that is significantly
harder and more impact-resistant than general
purpose polystyrene.
Ampa Plastics also manufactures a modified form of HIPS known as
ESCR/HIPS, or environmental stress crack resistant HIPS. ESCR/ HIPS is less
susceptible to environmental stress cracking than HIPS. ESCR/HIPS is extensively
used in the refrigeration industry.
Datasheet
Acrilan® is the Ampa Plastics acrylic brand
name for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
extruded acrylic sheet. This highly transparent and clear material is a viable alternative to
glass in glazing applications. Acrilan® is available as stock in two grades:
medium-impact (Acrilan® MI) and ultra-high-impact (Acrilan® UHI).
Acrilan® MI is available as stock in three colours (clear, opal and bronze),
while Acrilan® UHI is available only in clear and opal.
Datasheet
Ampagard® is the Ampa Plastics brand name
for polycarbonate extruded sheet.
Ampagard® is extruded from a UV-stabilised polycarbonate resin into
rigid flat sheets. (Profiled polycarbonate sheets are available from Ampa
Plastics’ sister company, Modek). These sheets are co-extruded with a
UV-protective layer to make them suitable for applications in South Africa’s
often harsh climatic conditions. Ampagard® is a very clear plastic and serves
as a viable alternative to glass.
Datasheet
Ampalite® is an extruded thermoplastic
made from PETg (glycol-modified polyethylene
terephthalate).
Ampalite® is very impact-resistant, easy to form and fabricate, and
does not require pre-drying, making it one of the easier thermoplastic
sheets to work with.
Datasheet
Polyethylene is the plastic probably most
used in daily life.
It is used extensively in automotive and industrial engineering
applications, as well as industrial packaging due to its excellent performance
properties. Ampa Plastics produces high-density polyethylene (PE-HD),
which has a density of 0.963, as stock. Other grades (i.e. medium - low
density) can be manufactured on request.
Datasheet
Polypropylene is of the polyolefin family
of plastics and is semi-crystalline in
molecular structure.
Polypropylene can be ordered from Ampa Plastics in two grades: as a
homopolymer (a general-purpose grade that is stiffer and more rigid than
a copolymer) and as a copolymer.
Datasheet
Ampa Plastics was the first plastics
manufacturer in South Africa to successfully
extrude twin-wall polypropylene, which it sells
under the brand names Coruplas® and Coruprint®.
Coruplas® twin-wall polypropylene is a plastic alternative to the traditional
corrugated cardboard and paper products used for applications such as
packaging and solar panels. Coruprint® is an adapted form of twin-wall
polypropylene that has been modified to create a superior flat surface for printing.
Datasheet
Ampaslip is the Ampa Plastics brand name
for ready-made plastic slip sheet used to
replace traditional wooden pallets when
transporting goods.
Instead of stacking goods onto a wooden pallet and then using a forklift
truck to pick up the pallet, goods are stacked on an Ampaslip slip sheet.
This sheet is smooth on the underside and scored on one or two edges to
create a “flap” that a “grabber” on a modified forklift truck can grab and
pull. The goods are then carried and pushed onto trucks or into containers for
further transport (push /pull system). Ampaslip sheets are usually designed for
one-time use, after which they can either be thrown away or recycled.
Datasheet
Ampadivide is our brand name for hardwearing
packaging boards used to divide
layers of goods (for instance, glass bottles
and jars) during transport. Ampadivide boards are made from polyolefin materials - light, rigid
thermoplastics with good impact strength and chemical resistance - all of
which are desirable properties in any packaging material. Ampadivide boards
are also re-usable and recyclable, making them an eco-friendly alternative to
wood- or paper- based dividers like corrugated cardboard.

Modek is the only manufacturer of transparent
roof sheeting in Africa, including both Fibreglass,
otherwise known as glass reinforced polyester (GRP)
and Polycarbonate (PC). In addition to being the
market leader in South Africa, Modek is one of the
key providers of this range of products into world
markets. Such sheeting is used for roofing and side cladding of steel structures, mainly for the purpose
of providing and enhancing natural light, but also
for specific applications.
All Modek products, especially its GRP products,
are specifi cally designed to withstand the harsh South African climatic conditions and compares favourably to that produced anywhere in the world due to the
wealth of local technological experience the company
has accumulated over more than 20 years, coupled
with the astute use of international technology. In short,
the company delivers a range of quality products
backed by exceptional customer service.
Modek sheeting is traditionally used to complement
steel, aluminium and fi bre cement sheeting where
the addition of natural light in roofs and side cladding
is necessary and desirable.
MODEK GRP sheeting is manufactured using a UV stabilised unsaturated polyester resin and glass fibre reinforcement material. The weathering surface of the industrial range is covered with a highly UV stabilised gelcoat layer. The domestic ranges have a resin rich surface protection. These process exceeds general GRP manufacturing standards. GRP sheets are manufactured by an automated continuous lamination process. This ensures consistently high product quality in successive consignments.
Polycarbonate is one of the most advanced polymers available. All MODEK Polycarbonate sheets have a co-extruded layer of highly UV stabilised polymer on the surface to create a water resistant surface.
The sheets have exceptional impact strength; have outstanding flame retardant characteristics and resistance to weathering. These qualities make Polycarbonate an attractive and cost effective choice.
Vesta manufactures acrylic-capped ABS
sanitaryware at its factory in East London, South
Africa. The range of products includes contractor
bathtubs, luxury bathtubs, corner baths, shower
trays and vanity wash hand basins, all available in popular sanitary ware colours, as well as white.
All Vesta products are manufactured from a unique
material which is widely used throughout Europe as
well as in the U.S.A., Australia and South Africa. What’s
more, the Vesta range of bathtubs, shower trays, vanity
units and spas come with an Agrément Certifi cation,
one of the best known and respected forms of high
standard compliance for building products.
