Increased Clamping Force for BOY Machine


BOY - specialist of injection moulding machines up to 1250 kN clamping force - has modified its largest vertical injection moulding machine. At the end of this year the insert moulding machine with 600 kN clamping force instead of the previous 550 kN, will be available.



"The increased clamping force is initially only available for the BOY 60 EVV with injection unit SP 215 (maximum stroke volume of 166.3 cm3)" explains Martin Kaiser, Head of Mechanical Design at BOY. In a further step the three smaller injection units SP 56, SP 69 and SP 82 will also be readily available for this model according to his announcement. Overmoulding of insert components of different sizes is easily possible with a total of eight different screw diameters.



Like all BOY insert moulding machines, the 4-tie bar BOY 60 E VV scores, particularly with the fixed lower plate, an ergonomically favourable table height of 975 mm and optimal access to the mould from all four sides. Compact dimensions of 3.21 m² and plenty of space on the rear machine frame for peripheral devices and accessory equipment guarantee a wide range of integration options for automation devices. An energy-efficient servo drive and the high-end control Procan ALPHA are standards of the BOY 60 E VV. The energy-efficient plasticizing unit BOY-EconPlast is available as an option starting from a screw diameter of 18 mm.

Samsung expanding EV battery plant in Hungary as EU probes state subsidy


Europe’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution is continuing apace as Asian battery manufacturers build up EV power pack capacity in recently launched or extended plants in the region.
South Korean giant Samsung is now investing 1.16 billion euros in a project to expand the lithium-ion battery production plant it launched in May 2017 at the town of Göd in northern Hungary.

The German machine manufacturer located in Neustadt-Fernthal starts the 2020 trade fair season with two injection moulding machines from its wide range BOY product programme. The Swiss Plastics Expo opens its doors in the beautiful Lucerne from 21 - 23 January. A versatile BOY 35 and a very compact BOY XS will be presented at the booth of the Swiss BOY agency Thomatech GmbH in Hall 2 / booth A 2005.

In cooperation with the Institute of Plastics Technology of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW, the project "How a plastic part is made" is clearly illustrated. During the three-day event Espresso cups are produced on the BOY 35 E. These will be provided with a hologram (made available by the company Morphotonix). The mould was developed by students of the 5th and 6th semester and enhanced in relation to digitization and Industry 4.0 by the Institute of Plastics Engineering FHNW in cooperation with the company Priamus. Furthermore, an Espresso cup will be presented, produced of a plastic fortified with a special dye which creates an impressing discolouration of the cup in case of heat exposure.

With its energy-efficient servo drive, the four tie-bar injection moulding machine BOY 35 E will impress the visitors of the internationally-oriented trade fair with its dynamic and smooth running. This is how Stefan Imhof, Managing Director of Thomatech, puts it in a nutshell: "The BOY 35 E with a clamping force of 350 kN offers our customers maximum flexibility, performance and efficiency. Especially this machine size is very well received here in Switzerland. "

The presence of BOY at the Swiss Plastics Expo will be complemented by a compact BOY XS (100 kN clamping force). Designed for industrial continuous operation, this BOY injection moulding machine always offers new perspectives for micro- and sprueless single-cavity injection moulding. Both, the BOY XS and the BOY XXS with an even smaller clamping force do not use the standard piston plasticizing with this machine size - they have a screw plasticizing of 8 to 18 mm according to the "First in first out" principle.

Modern 3D- Technology Can Help to Save Mould Costs

If only small batch sizes of a plastic part are required or if the component is still in the development phase, modern 3D- technology can help to save mould costs. Instead of a complex construction of expensive steel moulds, more flexible and cost-efficient solutions are required, especially in the prototype construction and in the increasingly individual designs of the components.

Direct or indirect

However, a direct part production from the 3D-printer differs significantly from an injection moulding part. Thus, for example, the physical properties of a 3D-printed component differ considerably from injection-moulded parts. The solution is 3D-printed mould inserts with which the plastic parts can be manufactured very cost-effectively in a cassette mould.

Based on the CAD data of the plastic part, the print data of the mould inserts can be processed accordingly and 3D-printers create the mould. Depending on the size of the components, this can already be done within minutes, while longer processing times are required for larger designs. Nevertheless, these mould inserts are designed much faster and more cost-effectively than their “steel competitors”.

 

From the plastic- to the metal mould

In the past two years, 3D-printed plastic mould inserts have revolutionized the mould manufacturing in the plastics processing industry.

 Low mould costs thanks to 3D-printed mould inserts as well as the fast implementation of modifications are the decisive advantages for the users. A “drop of bitterness” is, however, the lifetime of these moulds. High temperatures of the materials and large injection pressures affect the mould inserts more significantly and the operating times of the 3D-printed moulds dwindle. Especially in the case of small batches and average quantities, many users are looking for a more reliable solution. This solution is offered by the use of 3D-printed metal mould inserts. Higher stability and the possibility of a partly required mould temperature control / -cooling are provided with these metal mould inserts and thus they represent the next upgrade level of the additive production.

A good preparation is the be-all and end-all

However, the layer-by-layer print of the plastic- or metal-mould inserts is clearly different in terms of preparation and planning. In the case of the metal mould inserts a large number of additional elements have to be taken into consideration in advance. For the complex and highly 3D-dimensional parts, temperature control channels and their connections must already be provided during the planning stage of the mould inserts. In the case of the metal-printed moulds, the parting line still has to be processed, since the structure of the surface of the moulding part comes from the printing process. For the achievement of a defined and desired surface, this additional processing step is necessary.

The fact, that the technological and monetary expenditure of the 3D-printed mould-inserts is manageable and much more efficient for small quantities than the conventional steel moulds, is not fully applicable for metal mould inserts, depending on their design and complexity. Already during the design phase of the moulds or of the metal mould inserts the decision should be made on a metal mould insert or on a conventional aluminum or steel mould. The engineer should be familiar with the capabilities of 3D-technology to find a good and affordable mould in light of the additional possibilities.

BOY XXS Table Top Injection Molding Machine at the "Kunststoffen" in Veldhoven / NL

From September 27th to 28th 2017, the "Kunststoffen" takes place in the Netherlands - a trade fair for plastics processing. The BOY representative Plastima Breda BV presents the new BOY XXS table top machine. The production of snap hooks will be shown in these two days. For the production of parts printed metal mould inserts are used with a significantly longer durability than that of 3D plastic mould inserts.

 

The compact BOY XXS (63 kN clamping force) enhances the model range of BOY in the low clamping force range. The Table-Top-Machine is suitable for an industrial continuous use and is particularly suitable for micro injection molding-applications.
BOY also relies on the proven screw plasticizing, which works according to the "first in - first out" principle. For screw diameters between 8 and 18 mm, plasticizing volumes from 0.06 to 10.2 cm³ are possible. Also advantageous are the clamping plates of the
BOY XXS optimized for microforms of many standard manufacturers.

The BOY XXS is moveable on an optionally available base frame and with just one square meter of floor space the machine is flexibly useable. The BOY-mould- changing system is ideal for fast set-up times - especially for small batches. The cassette mould consists of a basic tool into which the 3D-printed mould plates with the integrated cavities are inserted (alternatively made of plastic or metal).

BOY with the highest presence at Swiss Plastics 2017

Neustadt-Fernthal, January 2017

The Swiss BOY representative Thomatech GmbH demonstrated its high presence in the Swiss market with three BOY injection moulding machines on the exhibition booth: a BOY 50 E with the new injection unit SP 170 and BOY-Handling LR 5, a BOY 35 E inviting the visitors to participate actively and a compact BOY XS with the smallest 8 mm plasticizing unit. With the well-known Swiss precision, the three injection moulding machines of the manufacturer located in Neustadt-Fernthal produced very interesting parts for the visitors.

The now even more compact BOY 50 E (3.25 m footprint and 500 kN clamping force) produced practical bottle spouts from NAS. An additional injection unit BOY 2C S over-moulded the transparent spout with two sealing lips from TPE. With the new removal handling BOY LR 5 the finished part was removed from the mould and placed onto a conveyor. The picture shows the complete production facility with the CE-certified housing.

 

The visitors of the Swiss Plastics could actively take part in the manufacturing process of the BOY 35 E. They could insert the blank of a hexagon socket wrench into the mould. By pushing the button, the electrically operated safety gate (optionally available) was closed. The inserted part was over-moulded with a handle and a sleeve of a hexagon socket wrench with a torque display made of glass fiber reinforced PP.

The subject of micro injection moulding, which is strongly demanded in Switzerland, was demonstrated on the compact BOY XS (100 kN clamping force) with the smallest injection unit SP 3. For this machine size the plasticizing unit of the BOY XS does not use the conventional piston plasticizing but a screw plasticizing with 8 mm diameter instead, according to the “first in first out principle”. Plasticizing volumes down to 0.06 cm are possible with this unit. The pitch volume is only 1.9 cm.

 

Bernd Fischer, Head of Application Engineering and Service, explains: „ In Switzerland we see a focus on precision machines with individual solutions and equipment. A standard machine for large quantities is often requested with a complete automation in Switzerland”.

 

Stefan Imhof from the Swiss BOY-representative Tomatech was very satisfied with the fair. Concrete deals and many promising talks were the reward for his engagement at the Swiss Plastics. In addition to the three BOY injection moulding machines, the successful company presented its comprehensive equipment in the machine periphery on its booth.
