“Vala Mkhukhu fills a gap in the market. This repair kit will allow residents in informal settlements to affordably waterproof and repair their homes. The plastic sheeting is used to cover the roof, preventing leaking, and the FLASHBAND can be applied over holes in the walls to patch them up. When the case is empty, it is small enough for children to use for schoolor other purposes,” he explains.

The 3 m x 5 m black plastic sheeting in the kit is made from recycled polyethylene. Tromp reveals that it is 150 microns thick, and will prevent rain and dust from entering the house through the roof. “The sheeting has a life span of a minimum of two years. Once the plastic sheeting has reached the end of its life, it will be recycled again.”
Tromp points out that the plastic sheeting is simple to install. “There are no special straps or pegs needed to install the sheeting. It is simply placed over the roof of the informal house and weighed down with heavy rocks to prevent it from moving. Once in place, it will seal the roof from any leaks.”

The FLASHBAND is a bitumen-based DIY waterproofing product that is covered with an aluminium foil to protect it from drying out as a result of being exposed to the sun. The FLASHBAND is easily applied to holes or cracks in the wallof the informal house to prevent leakage.
A challenge to introducing Vala Mkhukhu to the market is a lack of understanding of the product. According to Tromp, it is important to educate people about the product and its uses. He believes that the Vala Mkhukhu repair kits creates many opportunities and will benefit a lot of people.
“By placing the sheeting over the roof and sealing leaks in the wallswith the FLASHBAND, the residents in the informal settlements will have improved living conditions, as there will be no leaks in their houses. There is also room for entrepreneurs to create teams to go around and install this at people’s homes. There is the opportunity for small businesses to develop from this,” he adds.
Furthermore, Tromp states that the Vala Mkhukhu repair kits have led to job creation within Kahn & Kahn.“To assist with the packaging of the kits, several new employees have been hired. As demand for the product increases, there is the potential for future growth and job creation,” he concludes.
