16 July, 2014:Water infrastructure has been substantially improved for Tembisa residents on the East Rand of Gauteng, following a major upgrade that involved the replacement of a heavily corroded pipeline with R1,8-million worth of 600 mm coatedsteel pipes that feature a 6 mm wall thickness bevel ended three layer polyethylene (3LPE) coating.
The pipes were supplied by leading fluid conveyance products and solutions expert Incledon.Sales representative for civils Robinson Patji explains that the company successfully supplied the project with more than 1,1 km of the specialised pipes over a six month period ending in early-2013, in order to replace the existing underground concrete pipeline that was creating health and safety hazards as a result of substantial leakages caused by corrosion.
"The steel pipes feature a solvent free epoxy (Sigmaline) lining to provide improved resistance against water. The Sigmaline lining also ensures greater strength and durability of the buried pipeline. What's more, it is also cost effective without compromising on performance," he explains.
For enhanced protection, Patji reveals that the steel pipes also feature a 3LPE coating. “The 3LPE system is applied first by coating bare steel pipe with a primer, then applying a fusion bonded epoxy coat over the primer and lastly a finishing coat of polyethylene.”
Due to the predominantly residential infrastructure of the Tembisa water pipeline replacement project, Patji admits that a number of challenges were encountered throughout the duration of work. He says: "Gaining access to private homes and undertaking work across private properties did raise concerns with residents, which ultimately resulted in some degree of delays."
Despite these challenges, Patji notes that the project was completed on time and within budget. "An excellent working relationship between all parties involved in the project ensured that issues were communicated effectively, and dealt with swiftly and promptly to ensure minimal disruptions."
Patji indicates that Incledon continues to supply different entities in the mining, civil and infrastructure industries. "The company is recognised for supplying robust pipes that operate in harsh environments, and the SANS 719 rated pipes provided for this project are ideally suited for conveying water over an extended period of time."
With continued investment being placed into water and sewer upgrade projects nationwide, Patji is optimistic of the future outlook for Incledon in this sector. "Incledon boasts a proven track record in service delivery excellence on a number of national infrastructure upgrade projects. This places the company in a strong position for being awarded future tenders," he concludes.
